Descendants of Michael Maier
- My collection of Mayer descendants on
rootsweb.com. If your family is on this list then you are related.
It is still being constructed so use it with caution. It includes
notes and sources where available.
Use the index or search to find unlinked Mayer's.
There is still much work to be done on this
line.
Jacob Mayer came to the Hosmer area from Russia. He was married to
Katherine Hieb. To this union were born five daughters: Mrs. Philip
(Eva) Heil, Mrs. Theobolt (Katherina) Guthmiller, Mrs. Christ (Caroline)
Nelich, Mrs. Gottleib (Magdalina) Hieb, and Mrs. Gottlieb (Christina)
Kirschenmann. Katherine died and Jacob then married Caroline, sister of
Katherine. Caroline had one son, John Dockter. To Jacob and Caroline
were born five sons and two daughters: Jacob, Bernard, William, Mrs.
Fred (Rosa) Jundt, Otto, Mrs. Julius (Lydia) Eisenbeis, and Leonard.
Jacob died in February 1937 and Caroline died in August 1941. Jacob and
Caroline farmed northeast of Hosmer, later moved about two miles
southwest of Hosmer, then moved to Hosmer where they lived their
retirement years.1
After Katherine's death she was buried on the farm. Later her body
was moved to St. Paul's Congressional Cemetery in Hosmer. When Jacob and
Caroline died they were buried next to her.
We are seeking more information on Carolina Hieb Mayer. There is
little information in the Russian Colonies record about her. If you are a
relative or descendant please share what you know. Thanks
We would like to find:
- Identity of Carolina's first husband and his dates.
- Identity of Carolina's son, John Dockter b: about 1892
Found!
- Identity of Carolina and Katherina's parents.

Her son was not listed. Another person arriving in McPherson County from Odessa, Russia
on 8
Aug 1992 was Karl Stein. He was on the
SS Elbe.
I have looked over all the passenger lists of 1892 and cannot find
Carolina listed. There are many pages of original documents that are
unreadable.
I could not find Carolina Hieb in the Ellis Island database.
Posts by Tom Durst on
Ancestry.com:
Jacob Mayer, the other side of my mother's family came over from
Neudorf, South Russia in 1885 and his second wife Caroline Hieb w/9
month old son John Hieb in Aug,1892 (New York). I don't know the
ships' names, but I will check your site from time to time.
( I didn't read this right the first time it sounded like they were
traveling together. Now I see she came over in 1892 about the time of
her sisters death.)
Email from Ton Durst:
Hi Cousin: I believe that Jacob's parents are Eva Kaiser and Johannes
Maier from Neudorf, South Russia. I used Karl Stumpp's Book and
records on the Odessa Library site to research this family. Jacob
(Maier) Mayer is my gGrandfather on my mother's side. Did you notice
that Karl Stumpp used the surname Maier for all the Mayers, Maiers,
Meyers, Meiers, etc. present in the village of Neudorf? I haven't
tried to find Eva Kaiser's parents yet. Jacob Mayer, wife Katharina
(Hieb), daughters Eva and Katharina arrived in N. Y. on the ship Donau.
They homesteaded in Blaine Twp., McPherson Co., S. Dak. His wife
Katharina (Hieb) Mayer died 1891-1892, and Jacob sent for and married
her sister Carolina Hieb. Carolina and 6 month old son John (Dockter?)
Hieb arrived in N. Y. Aug. 1892 on the ship ??? (I have it down to 3
possible ships, but I haven't followed up yet.) I've attached a photo
of Jacob and Katharina (Hieb) Mayer. My Grandmother Magdalena (Mayer)
Hieb had written 'Poppa and Momma' on the back. Welcome aboard. Dr.

I
had a long response nearly completed yesterday, but the Ancestry
server blew me out. Jacob, Katharina and daughters Eva and Katharine
did immigrate together. They arrive in N. Y. on 4/25/1885 on the ship
DONAU. Caroline and 5 month old John (Dockter) Hieb arrived in N. Y.
Aug. 1892 on one of 3 ships (that I haven't researched yet). Gregg
Dockter who is the Neudorf coordinator for GRHS should beable to
answer our questions about John (Dockter) Hieb. John appears on the
1900 and 1910 Census' for Blaine Twp, McPherson Co., S. Dak. as John
Hieb. I don't know what happened to him after that. Your Edwin Hieb
photo wasn't attached to your recent message. I couldn't find a
Neudorf marriage for Carolina Hieb and a Dockter. The marriage would
have been 1890-91. Tom

From Marvin and Leona Warns:
David:
Sorry for the delay on your 8-29-02
inquiry. We left for Iowa on the 29th, I entered Hospital at Sioux
Falls, SD on 9-1-02, we got back to Aberdeen on 9-4-02. So will try
and help you out now.
On the Declarations of Intent
arrival date should be the date arrived in New York. Your Karolina
Hieb was also spelled Carolina or Caroline after arrival in 1892. She
was born on 2 Jan 1871 at Neudorf, Russia. I do not know who her
parents were but will continue to try and find out.
Caroline married (first name not
known) Dockter at Neudorf, Russia, date not known. To this marriage
one son was born John Dockter B. 10 Nov 1891 in Russia, and he came to
SD with his mother. It is assumed her husband died in Russia, no
records or information available at this time. If I find out
something will advise latter. Caroline had a sister Katharina Hieb
birth year not known at this time, who married Jacob Maier (Mayer in
SD). They came to SD in 1885. They had three children born in
Russia, three born in SD. Jacob's wife Katharina passed away about
1892, Jacob Mayer wrote to his sister-in-law Caroline and sent her
fare to come to SD to be his wife, She came in 1892 with her son John
Dockter. They were married about 1892-93, with seven children born to
this marriage. John Dockter remained with this family as a step-son,
but retained his Dockter name.
Caroline died in August 1941 and is
buried at Cong Cem, Hosmer, SD. Caroline's son John Dockter Born 10
Nov 1891 was married and latter divorced, I will get you info latter
if available on his wife and children. John Dockter died in a auto
accident near Broadus, Powder River County, MT on 4 July 1968,
Services Monday 8 July 1968 at 3:30p.m. Powder River Congregational
Church at Broadus, MT. Burial: Valley View Cemetery, Broadus, MT,
Mortuary, Graves Funeral Home, Miles City Mt.
Are you reseaching the Meier - Hieb
or Dockter Line? Any information you might have might be helpful here
to help with some more reseach.
If you would call me at 605-225-4322
I would be happy to visit with you in regard to the information on the
Family's I have metioned.
We have tried to get into Ellis
Island records but it is always busy.
PS: Just found a OB that has John
Dockter's children listed as Leonard, Bill, Thomas,Inez, Martha,
Irene, Grace,& Darlene.
