Four Generations of Descendants of Adam Hieb
- The largest list of Hieb's I have found anywhere.
It has errors so use it with caution. Some photographs and
biographical information is included.
In 1884 the Michael Hieb family, which by this time include a
young son, John, together with the Ludwig Bauer family, the Jacob Mayer
family, Jacob Hieb, a brother who
was single, the Johann Voegle family, the Friedrich Vilhauer family, the
Christ Hieb family all debarked from the same train in Ipswitch, South
Dakota and proceeded to the general area about 15 miles northeast of
Hosmer where homesteads were filled by all. The widowed father of
Michael also accompanied this group and resided with the Michael Hieb
family until his death in 1903. Most of the people in this group were
related to each other and their homestead for most part joined one
another.1
Jacob Hieb was born in 1863. He came to this section of South Dakota
as a young man along with his brother Michael in 1884. He found work
with surveyors in the western half of Mcpherson County. At that time all
of the land was not divided into sections. The surveyors measured off
the the sections and marked them by digging holes at each corner and
setting up rocks as markers. Some of these markers can can still befound
today. In 1888 Jacob was married to Elizabeth Ranchler. He then started
his own farm northeast of of Hosmer. Jacob and Elizabeth had six
children.2
Jacob Hieb was the grandfather of Mibert Walth.
