Theobald G. Guthmiller, the son of George Sr. and Katharina (Wagemen)
Guthmiller, was born on October 21, 1879 in Neudorf, South Russia. In
1887 he came to America with his parents who then homesteaded in
Cleveland Township, McPherson County northeast of Hosmer.
Here he grew to manhood and on December 6, 1904 he married Katharina
Mayer. Katharina, the daughter of Jacob and Katherina (Hieb) Mayer, was
born on November 20, 1884. When she was approximately six months old her
parents moved from South Russia to the United States and settled on a
homestead fourteen miles northeast of Hosmer.
The newly married couple homesteaded on the NE 1/4 of Section 2 of
Sangamon Township in Edmunds County at which location they farmed for 39
years. In March 1943 they sold their personal belongings at public
auction and the farm to son August and moved to Hosmer to retire. He did
carpenter work for many years and also maintained a large garden to pass
the time while living in retirement. They were members of the Jehovah
Lutheran Church northeast of Hosmer until they moved to Hosmer. They
then became members of St. John's Lutheran at Hosmer for the duration of
their lives.
Theobald died February 13, 1951 and Katharina died March 3, 1961.
Both are buried in the Bethany Cemetery in Hosmer. Eleven children were
born to this union.1
On July 13, 2003 David was able to addend a Guthmiller family reunion
that held each year in Tripp, South Dakota by the Guthmiller families
from that area. Marlene was unable to go because of a work conflict but
she is planning on going to the one next year that is scheduled for July
18, 2004. We are hoping that David's trip to Tripp is going to provide
us with more information about Marlene's cousins from the Tripp area.
In July 2003 We also made contact with another branch of the
Guthmiller's that live nearby that came from a branch of the
Guthmiller's that grew up in North Dakota. When Theobald G. Guthmiller's
father George Guthmiller came to the USA in 1887 two of his brothers,
Frederich and Johann and three sisters stayed behind. In 1910 Johann's
son Fred came to the USA and settled in Jamestown, North Dakota. One of
Fred's sons lives a few miles from us.
At first Mrs. Guthmiller was wondering who this nut was who was
standing on her doorstep but when I left she was very happy about the
information I was able to provide that help her with the research that
she had been doing.
